Richmond Shire Council was established in 1916 and first known as Wyangarie Shire Council. Richmond is situated half way between Townsville and Mount Isa on the Flinders Highway.  Its main industries including agriculture, tourism and some mining.  Richmond is most famous for its fossils and its world renowed museum Kronosaurus Korner. With a population of 1,000 in the Shire covering 26,000sqkm the town of Richmond is the central service centre. The town itself features a man made lake known as Lake Fred Tritton, named after the late Fred Tritton and former Mayor.  The lake offers a range of recreational activities from skiing, fishing and swimming.

Anzac Centenary Funding Project Complete

With funding made available from the Queensland Governments Anzac Centenary Grants, Council was able to engage Historian Brendan O'Keefe to comprehensively research Military Personnel who were born or enlisted from Richmond in all conflicts.  Previous records were incomplete or inconsistent with War Records.

This project revealed a total of 446 Returned Military Personnel (including 30 Women, previously not recorded); and 61 Serviceman Killed in Action or Dying from Wounds.

This newly acquired information will be printed in book format and will be available from the Shire Library as Reference Material.
