| The town of Richmond, situated half-way between Townsville and Mt Isa, is recognised as being one of the most attractive outback towns in Queensland and a town that takes pride in its appearance. It proudly boasts taking out the title of Queensland's Tidiest Town 2001 in the Keep Australia Beautiful Awards. Richmond's streets are lined with striking native garden beds, parks and recreation areas, which are always neat, well kept and green. The town has the social and economic facilities and amenities equal to much larger towns. The Region's development can be attributed to a proactive Council that takes the lead in social and economic matters, making the town a better place to live for all residents. Accessibility to Richmond Shire is mainly East-West by road along the Overlanders' Way (Flinders Highway), which stretches from Townsville on the coast of North Queensland, to Tennant Creek, in the heart of the Northern Territory, or by rail along the Great Northern Railway. The major Northern link is via the Richmond-Croydon Road with Southern access on the Richmond-Winton Road. In prehistoric times, Richmond's location was submerged beneath the Ancient Inland Sea, and today the fossilised remains of animal and plant life from this Sea are being marketed globally through the World-Renowned Kronosaurus Korner Fossil Museum. Links with neighbouring shires have been forged to create Australia's Dinosaur Trail, which is a self-drive 'triangle' including the towns Richmond, Winton and Hughenden, all containing significant areas of fossil discovery.
